Sex blogger says sorry to university for ‘victimless crime’

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 31 — Alvin Tan, the Malaysian at the centre of a controversy after he and his girlfriend posted in a joint blog photographs and videos of themselves having sex, apologised today to the National University of Singapore (NUS) for bringing disrepute to the school.
But Tan also pointed out that he was the perpetrator of a victimless crime.
Speaking to reporters after a NUS disciplinary inquiry in Singapore today, law undergraduate Alvin Tan said: “I apologised for bringing disrepute to the school”.
But the 24 year-old said he had reiterated during the inquiry that what he did was done in his “own personal time as a private individual and not an NUS student”, Singapore’s Straits Times newspaper reported in its online edition today.
“What I did was a victimless crime,” the newspaper quoted him as saying.
“Nobody was really harmed or hurt in the process.”
Today’s inquiry started at 2.30pm and ended at 4pm.
He told The Straits Times yesterday evening that his girlfriend, 23-year-old Malaysian Vivian Lee, had wanted to accompany him to Singapore, but was stopped by her family.
NUS had said earlier that the board will review the case before deciding on the appropriate disciplinary action to be taken against Tan.
Tan said the school would inform him of the board’s decision in seven days, the newspaper reported.
Tan is a NUS law scholarship holder. After news broke of his joint blog with Lee, the university said it would investigate him based on disrepute charges.
He had publicised on a Singapore forum the link to his blog earlier this month.
The NUS student had said explicit photos and videos of himself and his girlfriend going viral was “exciting”, according to Yahoo! Singapore.
On the site “Sumptuous Erotica”, Tan and Lee said they loved posting details of their sex life on the web “for everyone to enjoy” and that they uploaded only self-made content.
The blog has since been taken down.
Tan went to Singapore under the Asean scholarship in 2004 and attended Xinmin Secondary School and Raffles Junior College before he went to NUS.
He is based in Kuala Lumpur, where he has an online business. His mother helps to run a family business, while his father works in sales.
The couple also faces the possibility of criminal prosecution and jail time if convicted for exhibiting obscene material after they posted photographs and videos of themselves having sex on their blog.
Malaysian Police Commercial Crimes chief Datuk Syed Ismail Syed Azizan said recently that the authorities were considering taking action against the duo for violation of obscenity laws.
Under section 292 of the Penal Code, the couple could be prosecuted for exhibiting obscene material.
The punishment under the law is imprisonment for a term of up to three years or a fine.
