KUALA LUMPUR - Opposition leaders questioned Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin's boast that Malaysia may reach developed nation status by 2018 - two years ahead of the 2020 target deadline set by former premier Mahathir Mohamad.
"By what does he mean 'developed' status? Does he mean no more poverty or economically-disadvantaged groups? If so, then why would the bumiputera and Malays need further affirmative action and special help," MP for Batu Tian Chua told Malaysia Chronicle.
Muhyiddin had revealed the forecast in Kota Kinabalu, which ironically is the capital city of Sabah - one of Malaysia's poorest state.
"Economists have told me and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak in a meeting before, that we might just be able to reach it (developed nation status) earlier by 2018," NST reported Muhyiddin as saying.
Accompanying the DPM at the gathering of undergraduates held at the UMS Chancellory Hall were Chief Minister Musa Aman, UMS vice chancellor Prof Dr Mohd Harun Abdullah and state education exco Masidi Manjun.
