The prime minister’s promise last June to place the Election Commission (EC) under the oversight of a permanent parliamentary committee has yet to be fulfilled.
It also seems that a timeline to show when this is expected to happen is not yet in existence, a written reply in Parliament reveals.
“The implementation of the special (parliamentary) committee announced by the prime minister is still in the detailing stage,” Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Shahidan Kassim said.
He was replying to Liew Chin Tong (DAP-Kluang) who asked the prime minister for the date and timeline for the formation of the parliamentary committee to oversee the management of the EC, as well as its members.
Responding to this in a statement, Liew aid that Shahidan’s answer shows that “the prime minister’s promise will not be fulfilled”.
Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak had announced that the EC will be placed under parliamentary oversight in his speech during the celebration of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s birthday at Istana Negara on June 1.
