Anwar: PM's silence on AG's allegations deafening

How is it that in the face of reports of the attorney-general (AG) having allegedly employed CIA agents, the prime minister maintains a "stone's silence"?

"The recent allegations by Dr Mahathir Mohamad that the AG’s Chambers employed two CIA agents are shocking indeed and require an immediate response from Prime Minister Najib Razak as well as Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

"Coming in the wake of the reports exposing a global spying network by the United States, Australia and other countries conducted on Malaysian soil about which the PM till today has remained absolutely silent, this latest expose is nothing if not shameful and scandalous," said Opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.

The PKR de facto leader was responding in a statement last night to a report in The Malaysian Insider on a meeting said to have transpired between Mahathir and AG Abdul Gani Patail.

"Dr Mahathir is also said to have pressured Gani and called Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for a discussion.

"During the meeting, Dr Mahathir claimed that the AG's Chambers employed two CIA agents. Ahmad Zahid had agreed to probe into the claim," the online news site reported on Wednesday, citing unnamed "sources".

Anwar also said Gani "owes the public an explanation" over this and numerous other allegations on "his illegal and conspiratorial activities linked to his office".

These, he said, included former Kuala Lumpur CID chief Mat Zain's "numerous police reports".

"His (Gani's) failure to deny them renders him culpable of the wrong doings alleged and at the very least warrant an immediate suspension of duties.

"The prime minister must not ignore public demands for answers and the AG must not be allowed to continue in office seemingly oblivious of the stark allegations of nefarious and criminal activities committed by him," said Anwar, who was former deputy prime minister under Mahathir's administration.
