PETALING JAYA - Former MCA deputy president Tan Sri Lim Ah Lek revealed that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Abdul Razak agreed with him that the party needs a leadership change to regain the support of the Chinese.
"In a recent meeting, I mentioned that MCA needed a new leadership and the prime minister agreed," said Lim in an interview with China Press published today.
Lim said that Najib promised to do his best to help MCA to enable the party to win back the Chinese's recognition.
He however denied making any proposal to Najib to retain cabinet positions for MCA until the party holds its central elections, saying he only broached the subjects of MCA's new leadership, the importance of it staying in the Cabinet, its recent extraordinary general meeting (EGM) and the upcoming party polls.
He criticised party chief Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek, saying the latter had used the EGM to further his personal agendas.
"Since Chua Soi Lek has said after the 13th general election that he would not seek re-election in the party elections, he should play his role as party chief to identify and groom a new team," he said.
In a separate interview with Sin Chew Daily, Lim said he will continue to speak up on issues for the good of the party and Chinese community.
"If the media contacts me for comment on issues concerning MCA, I will continue to give my view," he said, with reference to a remark by Chua at the recent Selangor delegates conference that MCA veterans must not use the upcoming party polls as an avenue to settle old scores or vent their personal frustrations.
He urged Chua to emulate former president Tan Sri Ong Ka Ting who, upon announcing his decision not to defend his position, came up with the best new line-up he could and left it to the delegates to decide at the ballot box.
