Maria Chin to be new head of Bersih 2.0

Veteran rights defender Maria Chin Abdullah is set to take over as chairperson of the Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih), with effect from Nov 30.

NONEChin (right) was nominated by 13 of the 90 NGOs that have endorsed the coalition.

A three-member election committee also announced that  Bersih 2.0 will hold its first-ever election for office bearers at the Petaling Jaya Community Library on Nov 30.

The election panel comprises  Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall secretary-general Stanley Yong, former human rights commissioner Muhammad Sha'ani Abdullah and human rights lawyer Roger Chan.

"We hope to set an example for other NGOs," Yong told a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.

In all, 16 NGOs sent in nominations by the closing date on Nov 8, he said, with one form being rejected for technical reasons.

The new steering committee will comprise five members.

There are two nominees each for the vice-chairperson and treasurer. Another five activists are vying for the remaining two slots on the committee.

Candidates are allowed to campaign up to Nov 29.

Postal voting will be arranged for member-organisations from Sabah and Sarawak and elsewhere, who can use the ballots to be mailed on Nov 12.

Short biographies of the nominees and the list of endorsing organisations are available on the Bersih 2.0 website.

NONEThe current steering committee was headed by Ambiga Sreenevasan when it was set up 2010, with national laureate A Samad Said being roped in later as co-chairperson.

The movement organised two public rallies in 2011 and 2012 to push  for electoral reform.

After GE13, the committee had convened a People's Tribunal of international representatives, to hear complaints on election irregularities.
