Pensioner 'of royal Perak descent' seeking lost kin

A 70-year old pensioner claiming to be of Perak's royal lineage  is seeking to re-establish ties with his kin, saying that he had earlier been presumed dead.

NONE“He wants the royal family members to re-establish relations, which have been lost for such a long time, with him... that is his heart’s wishes,” said Tengku Amran Tengku Muhammad Shah at a press conference today through his spokesperson Ahmad Khairuddin Mohd Ahmad (left).

Ahmad Khairuddin claims that Tengku Amran is the grandson of Sultan Abdul Jalil Karamatullah Shah, who reigned in Perak from 1916 until his death two years later.

However while Tengku Amran was studying Islam in Indonesia from 1961 until 1984, he lost contact with the palace and was then presumed dead.

To a question, he denied that Tengku Amran was laying claim to the throne, saying that this is up to the Rajas.

NONETengku Amran (right) was also present at the press conference but was barely able to speak.
On the rare occasions that he did, his speech was slurred and was short of breath.

He also broke into tears when trying to answer questions on how he lost contact with the rest of the Perak royal family.

Ahmad Khairuddin explained that Tengku Amran was left with the slurred speech after surviving a stroke, and he also suffers from asthma and heart disease, among others, which is why he had to speak to the media on Tengku Amran’s behalf.

A document purported to be Tengku Amran’s birth certificate was also shown to the media.

NONEIt records Tengku Amran’s father as ‘Tengku Muhammad Shah ibni Sultan Abdul Jalil Nasiruddin Mukhataram Shah (Iskandar Muda)’ and his mother as ‘Puteri Aishah @ Puteri Udoh binti Temenggong Mohamad Noh’.

The purported birth certificate was supposedly issued in Sitiawan and records Tengku Amran’s place of birth as Istana Kayu, Bukit Chandan, Kuala Kangsar.

When asked why no attempt had been made to re-establish contact until now, Ahmad Khairuddin pointed to Tengku Amran’s advanced age.

In addition, he said this was the second press conference held on the same issue, with the first being held two or three years ago. However there had been no response.

Attempts were also made to contact the palace directly, Tengku Amran said, but he accused the sultan’s secretary of blocking  them.

“He stopped us and won’t let us see (Sultan Azlan Muhibbuddin Shah)... All the registered post that I have sent, he hides. He won’t give them to the sultan,” he said.
Malaysiakini has contacted Sultan Azlan’s private secretary Abd Rahim Mohamad Nor and the Perak palace regarding Tengku Amran’s claims and is awaiting a response.
