Scorching protests fail to torch incinerator plan

The government is determined to open tenders for a proposed incinerator in Kepong despite objections from local residents and NGOs.

The incinerator is to be sited in Taman Beringin.

Urban Well Being, Housing and Local Government Minister Abdul Rahman Dahlan said today the government decided to open international tenders within the next two months.

"We will continue engaging residents there, but in the meantime we have decided to open tenders," he said during a press conference at the Parliament lobby.

He said the government decided to even consider a wide range of technologies for the incinerator and would not restrict tenders to stoker incinerator proposals alone.

"Previously I have said that we have decided on a stoker incinerator. But now we have decided to open out tenders to everyone with different incinerator technologies," he said.

However, Abdul Rahman stressed that no matter what changes the government might make, the location of the incinerator would remain.

"The location stays," he stressed.
