No need to declare flood emergency, says Zahid

Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi says there is no need to declare emergency in Kuantan as a result of the flood situation there.

Although he recognised the current situation in Kuantan was bad compared with floods in previous years, Zahid said rescue and aid teams have been mobilised to do their work.

NONE"Although the flood situation is bad, emergency need not be declared. In terms of aid, the police and the Civil Defence Department have been mobilised, along with other agencies."

He said Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak would be visiting the flood plagued areas in Kuantan this afternoon.

"Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin will visit the flood prone areas tomorrow.

"Despite the Umno AGM, the PM and DPM are visiting the affected areas and this shows their and the government's concern," Zahid said.

However, he refused to respond when asked, twice, about the safety of the Kuantan area to the people, since the Lynas rare earths refinery is also located in the Pahang capital.

Floods have struck four states in the peninsula, Pahang, Terengganu, Johor and Kelantan, following continuous heavy rain over the past few days.

According to a Sin Chew Daily report, Lynas has given its assurance that the plant is safe, that all its operations were working well, even though Kuantan has been hit with serious flooding.
