Mukhriz: I'm already in the Umno supreme council

Kedah Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir said he is in the Umno Supreme Council, the most powerful party decision-making body, by virtue of being the state liaison chief.

Mukhriz said the party considers him as a MT member in attendance.

"Like all other state liaison chiefs who did not win, we are in the Supreme Council by virtue of being the state Umno leader. This is unlike (Malacca CM) Idris Haron and (Negri Sembilan MB) Mohamad Hassan, who contested and won. So I get to attend the meetings."

"The party president explained last night that whoever is in the meeting had the right to speak up. There is no difference. However, those in our position have no right to vote," he said.

Mukhriz pointed out that there have never been any instances where MT members are required to vote.

The Kedah state liaison chief was commenting on his position in the party Supreme Council, after he lost the Umno vice-presidency contest, where he expressed hope that he would be appointed.
Yesterday, it was reported that some Kedah members had expressed concern that Mukhriz was left out from the powerful supreme council post.

On the  post left vacant by religious scholar Mohd Kazim Elias who declined to be appointed, Mukhriz said there is no replacement as yet but said he would not be replacing Kazim.

His father and former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad was also asked to comment on Mukhriz’s position, but had little to say.

“I do not know about it. It is not for me to decide (over Mukhriz’s position). This is up to the PM and Umno president,” he said.

Mahathir: Opposition out to destroy

The former premier was also asked to comment on Umno president and prime minister Najib Abdul Razak’s speech where he said Malaysia lost RM40 billion in investments in the Pengerang project in Johor, to which he replied that is what the opposition does.

“They are not out to help but only help to destroy. He (opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim) went to Indonesia and slandered us. He went to Taiwan, he does that even. That is the opposition, not one thing that we do is good for them,” said Mahathir.

To queries of whether Umno should cooperate with the opposition, Mahathir said Najib had said that the party is willing to have good ties with other parties.

“I think he is sincerely prepared for this. If people want to be good with us, we also can be good to them. If they do bad, then it is different,” the former premier said.

On a request by Najib to reconsider giving up the post as Petronas adviser, Mahathir said that he is old and the doctors have advised him to slow down.

“I will give the PM’s request some thought,” he said.
