'Those who caused losses in Pengerang are traitors'

Those who campaigned against the Pengerang petrochemical project, leading to Petronas losing foreign investment have committed “treason”, Umno vice-president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said.

azlan"We can differ in opinions but we should not sabotage efforts to attract foreign direct investment.

"They have committed treason (penderhaka) and people like this have no right to be politicians or parliamentarians...

"They are also traitors (pengkhianat) to their own voters,” he told reporters on the sidelines of the Umno general assembly.

In comparison, he said, the BN government has never done anything to block investments into Pakatan Rakyat-led Penang.

He was commenting on Umno president Najid Abdul Razak’s policy speech where he blamed the opposition for causing national petroleum company Petronas to lose investments from Taiwan in Pengerang, Johor.

Petronas lost RM40 bil potential investment

"Recently, the Petronas president told me that we have lost close to RM40 billion in foreign investments from Taiwan for the Refinery and Petrochemical Integrated Development (Rapid) in Pengerang, Johor.

"This is because the opposition had gone to the country to scare off the investors.

NONE"Is this not an act that betrays the people? Is this not a betrayal to the country?" Najib (left) had asked.

Meanwhile, Ahmad Zahid stressed the Pengerang area is "well taken care of" by Petronas and environmental concerns raised by critics do not hold water.

When pointed out that local groups are also opposed to the Pengerang project, he said: "What locals? Only the DAP locals".

He said that although Umno is continuously attacked by the opposition, it is still keeping its doors open for "unity talks".

The party is also open to "cooperation" with any party, including conservative Malay rights pressure group Perkasa, even though this may contradict with its aim to practice "progressive" politics.

"What's important is that we practice moderation," he said.
