NGO: Najib gov't doesn't have monopoly on truth

A New York-based human rights group has reminded Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak that his government does not have a “monopoly on the truth” and should stop resorting to legal action to curb dissenting views.

As such, according to the Human Rights Watch, Najib must allow himself and his officials to be subjected to public criticism and critical journalistic coverage.

The NGO was referring to Najib’s recent threat to sueMalaysiakini over two reports which featured comments by its readers criticising his handling of the Terengganu political crisis earlier this month.

“Elected Malaysian government officials should not act as if they have a monopoly on truth.

“Holding public office involves a responsibility to listen to opposing views, not suing a media outlet for opinions expressed by readers to a website,” Human Rights Watch deputy Asia director Phil Robertson said in a statement today.
