KUALA LUMPUR: Yesterday he proudly became a card-carrying member of Opposition party DAP but soon after he was summoned via telephone to the police headquarters to be questioned today over allegedly seditious remarks against the Sultan of Selangor.
Constitutional law expert Abdul Aziz Bari received the police summons right after the media conference at the DAP headquarters where he announced he was joining the party.
Aziz, who said at the conference that he would be able to contribute to the Malaysian dream with his involvement in DAP, was alleged to have written seditions remarks against the Sultan in an article published last year.
“It was right after the press conference that Dr Aziz got a call asking him to appear in Bukit Aman (police headquarters) tomorrow,” his personal secretary, Andy Lim, was quoted in a Malay Mail Online report.
Aziz who had unsuccessfully contested the Sabak Bernam parliamentary seat as a PKR candidate at the 2013 general election had “allegedly insulted the Sultan” in an article he wrote about the state water deal.
According to Lim, police said Aziz had insulted the Sultan by “asking the people to go against him”.
