University of Malaya law lecturer Azmi Sharom was left speechless by the sudden hero-worshipping of former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad, following his appearance at the Bersih 4 rally.
Lamenting that Malaysians’ apparent short memory, he said it was Mahathir who caused much of the problems faced by the country today.
“His appearance twice at the Bersih rally was short, but suddenly he becomes a hero.
“Why are we in the situation we are in? Mahathir. Who destroyed our judiciary, frightened our mass media? Mahathir. Who destroyed our democratic institutions? Mahathir.
“Everything comes down to Mahathir, but suddenly Mahathir becomes a hero. I don’t know what to say,” he told a forum at the Malaysian Freedom Summit in Petaling Jaya today.
Mahathir - who is a staunch critic of his successor PM Najib Abdul Razak and 1MDB - had made his appearance on both days of the Bersih 4 rally, on Aug 29 and Aug 30.
During his second appearance, he told reporters that he was not there to support Bersih, but to show solidarity with the people after many had beseeched him to act against Najib.
Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah, who was also at the forum, concurred with Azmi.
She thanked Mahathir for his attendance, but said Mahathir’s legacy of centralisation of power and the culture of fear following Ops Lallang in 1987, would not be forgotten.
Maria's late husband, Yunus Ali were among the those detained under the Internal Security Act in 1987.
“For him to suddenly become a hero overnight just because he attended Bersih is not justified,” she said. - M'kini
