Released after a day’s jail, ‘red shirt’ organiser mulls suing media

Released this evening, he said his detention was based on what the media had reported about him.
"I am upset with the arrest. I was arrested on the second day of Aidiladha based on a news report which had failed to carry my full statement. They only carry half of what I said which had created an uneasy situation and caused problems to myself and to the police who had to leave their family during the Hari Raya to guard Petaling Street," he told reporters outside the Dang Wangi police headquarters tonight.
"I am not arrested. I was just brought in to have my statement recorded based on what was written in certain news outlets," he said.
The Sungai Besar Umno division chief added that his lawyers were going through the reports before deciding whether or not to take a legal action against the news agencies.
He refused to name the publication or the portals and said he was leaving the matter to his lawyers.
He said his statement had been sensationalised by certain pro-opposition media and warned them that stern action would be taken against them.
"I hope that the media will be more responsible and careful in their reporting," he said.
He reiterated that he had nothing to do with the alleged riot that was supposed to have happened today.
"I have repeatedly stressed that I was only a middle man at Petaling Street. In fact I was helping the police to disperse the crowd. I only relayed the dissatisfaction voiced by them about the Petaling Street issue. I also forwarded their demand to the higher authority," he said.
He said he wanted to clear his name as society has perceived him negatively.
"They thought that I am the organiser. I would like to explain that I am not involved or a person who is organising a riot at Petaling Street.
Jamal also blamed the Bersih 4 rally for creating "problems".
"If there had been no Bersih, there would have been no September 16 rally and no attempts to riot at Petaling Street," he said.
