Unfortunately, no reset button for Malaysia

YOURSAY | ‘But it’s easy to decide - the good of this country or the sake of one man?’
HaveAGreatDay: Well said, former diplomat Dennis Ignatius. Yet, I fear efforts to get rid of PM Najib Abdul Razak are unlikely to succeed.
Put in all your other conditions makes the test even more daunting.
David Dass: Yes, it is time to press the reset button. We must agree on the values that underpin our nation.
This constant squabbling for dominance of race and religion confuses things and we end up fighting one another when the priority is good governance. Good governance will reduce the points of conflict between us.
We should accept the fact that there will always be differences of opinion on politics, religion and economics. But on some matters we must all agree.
Do we agree on the rule of law? Do we agree on our democratic system - the supremacy of the federal constitution, the separation of powers, free and fair elections, the independence of the judiciary, a professional civil service and police force, and the inalienable rights of the individual - freedom of religion, freedom of movement, freedom of conscience and of expression?
We must also embed universal values of good and bad into the hearts and minds of our people so that no one is in any doubt as to what is right and what is wrong.
Fair Play: Reset button? What reset button? The truth is there isn't any.
This is just a figment of imagination so long as the ‘ketuanan’ (and the sons of the soil) assert that this is Tanah Melayu (including Sarawak and Sabah in their line of reasoning) and all the other communities are temporary residents.
Besides the ‘crutch’ mentality, the DNA has been embedded into them to the extent it has become a long-term liability in the development of a just, fair and equitable and united nation.
Anonymous_1372741039: Malaysians have been deceived and their trust betrayed by the very people who identify themselves as leaders of the Malays and who have sworn to uphold justice and to protect the rights of the rakyat and nation.
Instead, the rakyat are more divided than they have ever been, and more racialist and hateful in content.
Is this what Merdeka is all about? We have those in office whose only concern is about themselves and not the nation or rakyat.
Greed and corruption have become more paramount, more prevalent and sinister so much so that it is destroying everything in its path.
Invoking race and religion to protect their presence, to plunder and rape and further their ugly and insatiable greed without a care for country and people but themselves.
Unless a change takes place, Malaysia is assuredly on the path to being a failed state, that is if it has not already failed.
Just a Malaysian: Malaysia has to crash before everybody wakes up to the stupidity and the fraud of the ‘ketuanan’ policy.
The Malay masses must wake up to this fact and not get bogged down with their fake racial and religious superiority. There is nothing superior about a race if they cannot even live and earn a decent life.
Dont Just Talk: Most world leaders would have stepped down from his/her position as president or prime minister of a nation when he/she is caught with scandal, except Malaysia.
This man was caught with RM2.6 billion wired into his personal account and is getting away with it.
On his 40th anniversary celebrating this man’s entry into politics, we have seen one leader after another praising him for the many achievements/contribution to the nation, when our RM4.20 = US$1 and RM3.1 = S$1 during his tenure as PM.
The Analyser: A unity government will not work simply because all the potential players govern on the basis of ego and have their very own agendas usually based on race and religion.
The constitution is a good place to start, but even that needs to be rewritten after 58 years of abuse.
Those names the writer mentioned might well be admirable people, but being admirable is not enough. What is needed is a consensual philosophy from which policies can develop.
Only then can we start thinking about personalities to fulfil significant roles. Surely 58 years with various megalomaniacs has taught Malaysians something.
Telestai!: Dreamers will be dreamers. Change will not happen until the inevitable happens - bankruptcy.
Even then there are still many who are blinkered. Change may come but at a very high cost.
Send in the Clowns: We saw the destructive tsunami waves approaching, we chose to do nothing. This poorly reflects on our attitude and selfishness.
Half a century with the devils having the best of us, and we are still dreaming.
Drngsc: The path to change is long and difficult because corruption and abuse of power has allegedly been taking place for many years. But change we can. Let there be no doubt.
Anonymous #70881335: It is a simple thing for the rakyat to decide actually - for the good of this country or the sake of one man? -Mkini
