No reason was given, says lawyer Haniff Khatri Abdulla.
PETALING JAYA: The Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) has discharged its lawyer, Haniff Khatri Abdulla, from appearing in two court cases.
Haniff said MAIWP, in a letter earlier this month, told him it wished to discontinue his services.
“The letter (Nov 4) did not state any reason for the discharge.”
Haniff is representing former prime minister and Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) chairman Dr Mahathir Mohamad in his lawsuit against Prime Minister Najib Razak over alleged claims of abuse of power in office.
Haniff said he wrote twice to MAIWP for a new set of solicitors to appear for it in the Sidang Injil Borneo (SIB) church’s lawsuit and Sarawakian Jill Ireland’s legal challenge, both against the home ministry.
“But it did not respond to our letters,” Haniff said.
MAIWP is appearing as an amicus curiae (friend of the court) in both cases.
Haniff also said a representative from his law firm informed the court about MAIWP’s decision during SIB’s case management today.
“The court directed us to inform MAIWP to get a new solicitor.”
Haniff said if the council did not have anyone to appear for them in both cases, their role may be in doubt. -FMT
