National car maker Proton is a failed, white elephant of Dr Mahathir Mohamad's, said Tourism and Culture Minister Nazri Abdul Aziz.
"That project of his is a failure, because every year they are asking us money.. Asking us to help support them.
"This is what we have inherited from him... This is a white elephant project," Nazri said at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.
He was responding to Mahathir's criticism of plans to sell a majority stake in Proton to Chinese car manufacturer Geely Automobile Holdings.
Nazri said such a move was necessary as the government could no longer afford to support Proton.
Meanwhile, the Umno minister also poked fun at Mahathir's criticisms that the country is being sold to China.
He jibed that with major investments from other countries such as India forthcoming, Malaysia would be "selling itself to the world."
However, he said seeking foreign investments is what Mahathir himself did.
"That is exactly what he was doing when he sent (former international trade and industry minister) Rafidah Aziz all over the world to get investments," Nazri said.
He was speaking to reporters after launching a national shopping campaign at Suria KLCC mall. - Mkini
