No notice so far of anti-Icerd rally in Negeri, say cops

The police said today they have received no notification of a planned gathering in Seremban on Friday to protest the proposed ratification of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (Icerd).
Negeri Sembilan police chief Noor Azam Jamaludin said the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 requires organisers to notify the police 10 days before the date of the gathering.
Organisers are only required to notify or inform the officer in charge of the police district of an intended assembly. Under the Act, the police have no authority to refuse the assembly.
“If the organiser wants to go ahead with the gathering, they are reminded not to cause any provocation, undermine public order and cause traffic congestion.
“They have a right to express themselves, but they should not go to extremes and undermine public security,” he said when approached after the disposal of court drug exhibits in Port Dickson.
Negeri Sembilan Umno Youth planned the gathering to oppose Icerd at the State Mosque in Seremban at 2pm on Friday.
It is organising the gathering with Negeri Sembilan Puteri Umno and PAS Youth.
On another matter, Noor Azam said that the police have received six reports on old video footage of Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department P Waythamoorthy allegedly making sensitive statements when he was leading the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf).
“We will hand over the reports to Bukit Aman for investigation,” he said.
