WORSHIPPERS at the Seafield Sri Maha Mariamman temple are hopeful that its land issue will be resolved now that the Attorney-General’s Chambers has offered to help.
Save Seafield Temple Task Force committee member Elangovan Annamalai lauded Attorney-General Tommy Thomas’ offer of assistance as very good news.
“We believe the truth will prevail, and that the A-G will be able to resolve the issue with the developer.
“We also want a thorough investigation carried out, without fear or favour, into what had transpired (deals made concerning the land). There are so many versions of what has been said about the land and its ownership,” he told The Malaysian Insight.
Yesterday, Thomas said he can help resolvethe land dispute between the temple in Subang Jaya and developer One City Development Sdn Bhd.
He said the issue stemmed from a consent order that was recorded by the court in a civil suit, adding that the A-G has the power to help settle the matter.
“I’d be happy to meet the lawyers representing all the parties to resolve their dispute against the background of the power conferred on the office of the A-G in respect of charitable trusts under Section 9 of the Government Proceedings Act 1956.”
The Shah Alam High Court yesterday rejected an injunction application by a group of devotees, and mere hours later, another court granted an interim order to stop One City Development from taking over the temple land.
The second hearing took place before Shah Alam High Court judge Wong Kian Kheong, who allowed the interim injunction to restrain the developer from taking steps relating to the possession of the temple.
The interim injunction is in place until the disposal of the application for injunction on January 11 next year.
Elangovan hopes that the issue can be resolved as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, one thing that has come to pass is the tense atmosphere outside the temple.
Last night, only a handful of people were seen there, compared with the large crowds that had gathered since violence erupted in the wee hours of Monday.
