Mat Hasan rams ex-CM over 'goats for votes' promise

RANTAU POLLS | Former Malacca chief minister Idris Haron's promise to treat voters at a Rantau polling district with a feast of goats is wrong, Umno acting president Mohamad Hasan said today.
"(He) can't make (such) a promise. That is wrong. He made the promise, so that is his problem.
"We will 'kambingkan' (deal with) him," Mohamad added in jest.
Last night, Idris promised to provide voters in Angsa Mas two goats if they give Mohamad a 300-vote majority in the polling district.
Mohamad faces PKR's Dr S Streram and two independent candidates in the April 13 Rantau by-election.
Based on parliamentary level data from the 14th general election, BN had previously lost to PKR in Angsa Mas by 22 votes.
Under Section 8 of the Election Offences Act, it is an offence to treat someone, including with food, before, during, or after an election.
Previously Miri MP Michael Teo landed in hot water after he gave food vouchers, worth RM75,000 in total, to 300 school children in Rantau last Thursday.
EC deputy chief Azmi Sharom said this is considered treating.
However, the timing of Teo's contribution lands it in a legal grey area, as "before" an election is not clearly defined.
Similarly, the Election Offences Act does not define what it means by "after" an election. - Mkini
