Human rights activist Melissa Sasidaran is new director of Lawyers for Liberty

Melissa Sasidaran was previously the legal and campaign coordinator at Lawyers for Liberty.

PETALING JAYA: Lawyers for Liberty (LFL) today announced the appointment of human rights lawyer Melissa Sasidaran as the new director of the human rights and law reform body.
This follows the resignation of its former director and co-founder Latheefa Koya, who has been appointed the new chief commissioner of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
LFL adviser N Surendran congratulated Latheefa on her appointment.
“Latheefa’s long-standing track record as a human rights lawyer and activist will serve the MACC well in its effort to eradicate corruption. We congratulate her on this important appointment and wish her all success in the battle against corruption.
“Following Latheefa’s resignation from LFL to take up her new appointment, we are pleased to announce that human rights lawyer Melissa Sasidaran has been appointed as the new LFL director,” he said in a statement today.
Melissa was called to the Malaysian Bar in 2010 and completed her LLM in Human Rights, Conflict and Justice at SOAS University of London in 2018.
According to Surendran, Melissa was the legal and campaign coordinator at LFL prior to her latest appointment.
“She has represented numerous civil society bodies and then opposition politicians/activists in urgent arrests, remand hearings and criminal cases in court, particularly for offences under the Sedition Act 1948, Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 (PAA), Penal Code, and Communications and Multimedia Act 1998,” he added.
Latheefa replaces Mohd Shukri Abdull, whose contract was allowed to expire ahead of its deadline on May 17, 2020. - FMT
