Former PKR leaders Azmin Ali and Zuraida Kamaruddin, who recently joined Bersatu after defecting from Pakatan Harapan, have been appointed as the party's supreme council members.
According to a statement by Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin, the decision was made by party president Muhyiddin Yassin during the supreme council meeting yesterday.
For the record, Azmin was PKR deputy president while Zuraida was its vice-president. Both of them only joined Bersatu officially last month together with former PKR MPs who defected in February to support Muhyiddin in forming the Perikatan Nasional government.
Muhyiddin, who is the prime minister, also retained Hamzah in his current position, while PTPTN chairperson Wan Saiful Wan Jan was appointed party information chief. He was also a member of the supreme council in the previous term.
Another figure appointed into the council was Alor Gajah MP Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof, who is former Malacca Bersatu chief and former division chief for Masjid Tanah.
Redzuan failed to defend his division chief post when he was defeated by Masjid Tanah MP Mas Ermieyati Samsudin, who is a former Puteri Umno chief, in February.
Other appointments to the supreme council included Mohamed Salleh Bajuri, who was reappointed as party treasurer, Rural Development Minister Abdul Latiff Ahmad (member), Abdul Rashid Ansari (member), and Muhammad Faiz Na'aman (member).
In the statement, Hamzah said Muhyiddin had in the meeting also appointed the state Bersatu chiefs and their deputies.
Among them are Hamzah, who is now Perlis Bersatu chief, former executive secretary Muhammad Suhaimi Yahya (Federal Territories), Mohd Suhaimi Abdullah (Kedah), Shabudin Yahaya (Penang), Abdul Rashid Asari (Selangor) Eddin Syazlee Shith (Negeri Sembilan), Mohd Rafiq Naizamohideen (Malacca), Kamarudin Md Nor (Kelantan), Razali Idris (Terengganu), Hajiji Mohd Noor (Sabah), and Jaziri Alkaf Abdillah Suffian (Sarawak).
Muhyiddin appointed himself as the Johor Bersatu chief, while his deputy Ahmad Faizal Azumu is the chief for both Perak and Pahang.
Meanwhile, the supreme council in yesterday's meeting also decided to appoint chairpersons for its bureaus.
Muhyiddin is chairperson of the Bersatu political bureau, together with Ahmad Faizal (administration bureau), Ronald Kiandee (election and research bureau), Mohd Radzi Jidin (training and membership bureau), Rafiq (recruitment and new branches bureau), and Shabudin (religious bureau).
The council also appointed Economic Affairs Minister Mustapa Mohamed as the party's economic bureau chairperson, and Azmin, who is the international trade and industries minister, as the international bureau chairperson.
