Bersih offers to hold debate among prospective Sabah CMs

Malaysiakini

SABAH POLLS | Electoral reform group Bersih has offered to host a debate among politicians vying to become Sabah chief minister in the coming state election.
“We believe such election debate will improve political culture in Sabah with more policy debates, political dialogues, and intellectual exchanges to preserve a more democratic, intellectual, and harmonious political environment,” it said in a statement today.
Bersih said it has sent invitation letters to five prospective candidates for the top post, namely Warisan president Mohd Shafie Apdal, Sabah Umno chief Bung Moktar Radin, Parti Cinta Sabah president Anifah Aman, United Sabah National Organisation de facto leader Pandikar Amin Mulia, and former chief minister Chong Kah Kiat of the Liberal Democratic Party.
“The main objective of the debate is to allow all Sabahan voters to listen to the vision, manifesto, and program from the candidates for the position of chief minister by the different political coalitions and parties in order for all voters to make an informed decision in determining the future of Sabah.
“The chief minister candidates will be requested to present their election manifesto, vision, and program for Sabah if they are elected as the chief minister and form the state government for the next five years. Important questions related to politics, economic development, education, as well as social and cultural development in Sabah will be posed to the candidates.
The group said a moderator who is neutral will facilitate the election debate.
It said the debate will be held on Sept 19 from 7.30pm until 10.00pm in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.
It asked the prospective candidates to respond to its invitation by the coming Monday.
If at least two candidates agree, then Bersih will proceed to organise the debate and have it broadcasted live on mainstream and social media.
Nomination day for the Sabah state election is tomorrow, while polling day falls on Sept 26. - Mkini
