Bersih wants MACC to probe PM after mock cheque bonanza

SABAH POLLS | Electoral watchdog Bersih has called on the MACC to investigate Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin for allegedly using corrupt practices while campaigning in Sabah.

This was after mock cheques for more than RM60 million were presented at an event Muhyiddin attended in Beaufort yesterday.

"Muhyiddin is clearly using his position and government funds to induce voters in Sabah to vote for parties and candidates aligned to his Perikatan Nasional (PN) government," Bersih claimed.

"We call on the MACC to investigate such acts of corruption by the PM and all who would use their position and resources to fish for votes," it said in a statement today.

They also urged members of the public who were at the event to lodge police reports.

Yesterday, Muhyiddin attended an Agriculture and Food Industries Ministry event, that was also attended by PN's incumbent Klias candidate Isnin Aliasnih.

During the event, mock cheques for more than RM60 million in aid were presented.

The aid included over RM20 million in allowances for farmers and fisherfolk announced by Muhyiddin.

In his speech at the event, Muhyiddin also noted that a state government's solitary efforts would pale in comparison to assistance it could receive from Putrajaya if both governments were in the same coalition.

Section 10(a) of the Election Offences Act 1954 states that anyone who during an election gives money or any valuable consideration to induce voters to vote for a candidate is deemed to have committed the offence of bribery.

Meanwhile, Muhyiddin also announced yesterday that the federal government was restoring the fisherfolk cost of living allowance (ESH) back to RM300.

In a separate statement, former deputy agriculture minister Sim Tze Tzin said that this was just riding on the hard work put in by the previous Pakatan Harapan government.

Sim said the he and then agriculture minister Salahuddin Ayub had been striving to restore the ESH for fisherfolk to RM300.

They also set in motion the programme for fisherfolk to make Social Security Organisation (Socso) contributions.

"(Muhyiddin) should not take credit just to win an election," the Bayan Baru MP said.

"The fact is, the PN government lacks creativity or new exciting policies. The people have not really seen new policies in the agriculture sector under PN, they have only continued policies pushed by Harapan," he added.

The ESH for fisherfolk had been reduced from RM300 to RM200 by Harapan, before being raised to RM250 under Budget 2020. - Mkini
