Campaign takes 'grave' turn - Shafie says grandmothers buried in Semporna, not Japan

Malaysiakini

SABAH POLLS | The battle for Sabah is no longer confined to the living with Warisan president Shafie Apdal roping in the departed as well.
This was in response to those who branded Warisan as a “PTI (illegal immigrants)” party.
Training his guns on former chief minister Musa Aman, Parti Cinta Sabah (PCS) president Anifah Aman and Star president Jeffrey Kitingan, he warned his detractors not to go overboard.
Shafie pointed out that he is of Bajau descent and had served as a former deputy defence minister, arguing that such a post would not be given to an illegal immigrant.
“My grandmothers and ancestors' graves are in Semporna, not Japan... Where is the (grave) of Musa Aman's grandmother? Anifah Aman's grandmother?” he asked.
“I don't wish to mention. But don't go overboard in insulting and belittling me,” he added during a programme in Kunak today.

The incumbent chief minister said the Sabah constitution categorises the Bajau people as natives of the state.
Malaysiakini is contacting Musa and Anifah for comment.
This is not the first time Shafie has responded to this issue, having warned that he would sue those who made such allegations in the past.
In May 2018, Kitingan had said the illegal immigrants in Sabah were delighted when Shafie was sworn in as the chief minister.
The PCS president also raised the possibility of a drastic increase in the number of illegal immigrants becoming Malaysian citizens.
In June, Kitingan also accused Warisan of using the support of illegal immigrants to consolidate its power in the state.

During the Kimanis by-election in January, Anifah had touched on Sabah's temporary pass (PSS) plan for illegal immigrants and remarked that voting Warisan was akin to betraying the locals.
The PSS plan was later aborted.
In the Kimanis polls, Warisan's attempt to capture Anifah's former parliamentary seat failed after its candidate Karim Bujang lost to BN's Mohamad Alamin.
Anifah, who was the former foreign minister, had won the seat for BN in the last general election but the Election Court declared the results null and void due to irregularities.
Sabah comprises 28 percent of non-citizens, which is far higher than all other states. - Mkini
