Malaysiakini

Malaysians celebrated the 57th Malaysia Day today, to commemorate the establishment of the Malaysian federation, despite facing the Covid-19 pandemic.
Although movements are limited due to the recovery movement control order, the spirit of love for the country was still evident in this new norm.
Without official celebrations in some states, like in previous years, various parties took the initiative to enliven the celebration on a smaller scale.
Pahang Menteri Besar Wan Rosdy Ismail had a friendly chat via video conferencing with frontline staff in Pekan, including the district police headquarters, hospital, fire station, and 505 Regiment Camp Sungai Miang.
The state-level celebration was enlivened with pantomime performances themed on the fight against Covid-19 as well as a singing performance by firefighter Syafiq Farhain and members of the uniformed team which took place at the National Youth Skills Institute today.
In Sabah, incumbent Chief Minister Shafie Apdal said the Malaysia Day celebration was important especially for Sabahans to recall the formation of Malaysia on September 16, 1963.
He said the date was the starting point for Sabah and Sarawak to be free from the shackles of colonialism.
“The sacrifices made by past freedom fighters... when Sabah was once partially conquered by the Japanese, before achieving independence,” he said.
Shafie was speaking to reporters after the state-level Malaysia Day celebration at the Sabah International Convention Centre.
Also present was Sabah Governor Juhar Mahiruddin and wife Norlidah RM Jasni.

In Negeri Sembilan, the Department of National Unity and Integration celebrated Malaysia Day by holding a Lorong Ceria Merdeka and Rumah Ceria Merdeka competition in addition to an independence talk slot.
It was held in collaboration with the Bandar Warisan Puteri Rukun Tetangga neighbourhood watch, attracting about 100 residents in the area. The winners of the competitions held since Aug 12 will be announced today.
In Penang, the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture Penang Office organised the Voluntourism Malaysia Clean and Beautiful Programme at National Park, Teluk Bahang.
Apart from that, the Teluk Bahang assemblypersons’s service centre also organised the Konvoi Lautan Merah Hari Malaysia programme which presented donations to veterans of uniformed services.
Meanwhile, in Machang, Kelantan, more than 200 participants took part in a Merdeka Fun Ride 2020, which was attended by Kelantan Umno chairperson Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub.
