SABAH POLLS | DAP candidates in the upcoming Sabah state election will forgo the use of their own party logo and contest under the Warisan ticket instead.
The party’s secretary-general Lim Guan Eng (above) said this was a difficult decision for the DAP’s central executive committee to make, but it will accede to Sabah DAP's request to contest under a common logo.
“Respecting the wishes of the DAP Sabah State Committee, our members, and supporters in Sabah, I hereby announce that all DAP Sabah candidates will contest in the upcoming state election under Parti Warisan Sabah's banner.
“The political stakes are too high. We cannot afford to lose the Sabah state election,” he said in a statement today.
Lim explained that the coming state election will be a crucial bellwether for the future of Sabah, and will have far-reaching implications.
“A victory for (Warisan president Mohd Shafie Apdal) will be a resounding rejection of the politics of treachery, where the voters’ mandate in the 2018 general election can be simply betrayed, bought over, and nullified.
“The politics of treachery has brought forth an unelected federal government that unashamedly condones exclusivist and extremist policies of race and religion,” he said.
A major victory in Sabah can only be achieved by having Warisan and its allies present a unified front, he added, and this will send three “loud and unambiguous” messages.
Lim said the first is that Sabah is no place for political treachery and representatives who can be bought with money will be rejected.
The second is that Sabahans want a government that is voted in by the people, for the people.
“Only a government voted in by the people can serve, help, and protect the people and their rights.
“A government consisting of political ‘frogs’ who are bought by money will only betray and rob the people of their rights and benefits,” he said.
Lastly, Lim said Warisan’s victory in Sabah will bring hope to the rest of Malaysia that an elected government “can be the people’s protector, a defender of democracy and justice, a guardian against corruption, and a custodian of our children’s future”.
“We are confident that the spirit and values of DAP will continue to be the guiding principles of all our candidates as we join hands with our allies in Warisan Plus to win this election together,” he added.
Apart from DAP, Amanah will also be contesting under the Warisan ticket in the Sabah election.
PKR, however, will be using its own party logo although it is also allied with Warisan.
Apart from the three Pakatan Harapan parties, the United Progressive Kinabalu Organisation (Upko) party is also aligned with Warisan.
Meanwhile, in a separate statement, acting Sabah DAP chief Frankie Poon Ming Fung said adopting Warisan’s logo is a demonstration of amity and unity with Warisan Plus - an informal term for the alliance.
“Though we are rather sad for the DAP to forgo our traditional ‘Rocket’ symbol and instead to use Warisan logo, yet this is the right thing to do.
“We have made the decision after consulting our supporters in the urban and rural areas.
“In the spirit of camaraderie and in view of this state election being of utmost importance for the people of Sabah and the country, we have collectively decided to accommodate the suggestion by Warisan president Shafie Apdal to use a common logo,” he said, adding that the hopes the move will also enhance the winnability of all Warisan Plus candidates. - Mkini
