MACC to present papers to Cabinet on Constitution amendments

The MACC is proposing a new appointment process for its chief and the formation of an MACC Service Commission.
PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will be presenting papers to the Cabinet on the new appointment process for the anti-graft agency’s chief and the formation of an MACC Service Commission.
In a statement today, it hoped the matter could be tabled at the next Parliament session once it had obtained the Cabinet’s approval.
“The two proposals are new provisions and will require the support of two-thirds of MPs for the Federal Constitution to be amended,” it said.
MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki had announced the two proposals in a radio interview yesterday.
He said the appointment of the next MACC chief commissioner would need two-thirds support in Parliament.
He said MACC had also agreed that the termination of its chief commissioner should go through a special tribunal.
Azam also confirmed that the Special Cabinet Committee on Anti-Corruption agreed to segregate the recruitment and termination of MACC staff by establishing an MACC Service Commission.
He said giving the MACC the power to appoint and terminate staff through the commission would allow for greater transparency and freedom to prosecute cases. - FMT
