Ministry forms a new unit to address environmental crimes

Malaysiakini

A new unit to focus on preventing environmental crimes, especially cases of pollution in the country, has been set up by the Energy, Science, Technology, Environment and Climate Change Ministry.
Its minister, Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man (above) said the unit is expected to start operations next month and will involve the Department of Environment, the National Water Services Commission, Biosafety Department and the police working in cooperation.
"I would like to make this announcement following the special meeting between the ministry and the Home Ministry earlier in the day.
"This unit, which is being formed administratively, is expected to be operational in early October," Tuan Ibrahim told a press conference in Putrajaya yesterday.
Also present at the press conference was Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department deputy director Mior Faridalathrash Wahid.
Tuan Ibrahim said his ministry would also hold discussions with the Public Services Department and Finance Ministry to get a budget allocation and additional manpower.
"This is so that the unit can be further strengthened, involving more personnel and additional funding," he said.
Polluted water from the Rawang factory drain flowing into the Sungai Gong.
On Sept 3, another round of water disruption hit 1,292 areas in Kuala Lumpur, Petaling, Klang, Shah Alam, Kuala Selangor, Hulu Selangor, Gombak and Kuala Langat.
It was the fifth time such an incident had occurred since 2019.
The incident on Sept 3 was caused by pollution in Sungai Gong, which had been traced to a factory in Rawang.
The factory has been ordered to close, while several individuals were picked up by the authorities and remanded to facilitate their investigation.
Tuan Ibrahim, who is Kubang Kerian MP, said that the number of personnel in the unit would depend on the situation and needs.
Asked on whether it would only focus on the water issues in the Klang Valley, he said that the unit would be looking at water pollution nationwide. - Mkini
