PETALING JAYA: A Barisan Nasional (BN) leader has dismissed the notion that Umno will be in breach of the Muafakat Nasional (MN) charter if it stops supporting Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.
In a statement, Selangor BN information chief Isham Jalil said there was nothing in the MN charter demanding loyalty or support for a prime minister.
“More so when the prime minister is from PPBM which is not a part of the charter.”
Earlier today, PAS demanded that Umno explain talk of some of its MPs withdrawing their support for Muhyiddin in favour of PKR president Anwar Ibrahim who had declared he had the support of the majority of MPs to form the government.
PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said if this was true, Umno would be breaching the parties’ agreement under the MN charter.
“The MN charter was birthed out of the goal to unite Muslims in the country and to defeat the Pakatan Harapan (PH) coalition,” Takiyuddin had said.
Isham said the MN charter was signed on Sept 14, 2019 when PPBM was still a part of PH, the coalition which MN sought to defeat.
So, he said, the view that any shift of support from Muhyiddin by Umno was a breach of the MN charter, was “factually wrong”.
“I hope all parties will remain steadfast and return to the original path when MN was forged on Sept 14, 2019,” he said, adding this would prevent both parties from being dragged into the political games of those with vested interests.
“I am confident if we return to the original path we will succeed in accomplishing our goals enshrined in the MN charter.”
Meanwhile, Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said MN leaders could seek whatever explanation they needed at the MN committee meeting next week.
He added that Umno too needed an explanation for PAS’ decision to join Perikatan Nasional as a component party. - FMT
