Non-official media ban: EC's move for nomination process undemocratic – Fahmi

Malaysiakini

SABAH POLLS | The Election Commission's (EC) move to bar non-official media from covering the nomination process in all nomination centres is disappointing and undemocratic, said PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil.
"This is a disappointing development and shouldn't happen.
“An early registration for media practitioners who are interested to cover in each nomination centre could be done to control the number of those present at the nomination centres.
"The (EC's) move is undemocratic and an error which goes against the spirit to reform the election," said Fahmi in a statement.
Fahmi, who is also the Lembah Pantai MP, urged the EC to explain and guarantee access to the media to cover the counting process and the announcement of the result at the nomination centres on Sept 26.
Earlier, EC, in a brief statement to the media, announced that media other than official media namely RTM, Bernama, Information Department, and Finas, are not allowed to enter the nomination centres in all 73 constituencies involved.
It said this is in line with the implementation of the special SOP to curb the Covid-19 outbreak and ensure the safety of all parties, including media members.
The nomination process for all 73 state seats started at 9am and ended an hour later.
Warisan, led by its president and incumbent chief minister Shafie Apdal, is seeking to defend its hold on the state government, along with allies Upko, DAP, PKR, and Amanah, who are collectively known as Warisan Plus.
They are up against the coalitions of BN, Perikatan Nasional, Parti Bersatu Sabah, and an array of local parties.
Polling day is on Sept 26 after a 14-day campaign period. - Mkini
