Women, Family and Community Development Minister Rina Harun plans to seek an out-of-court settlement with a French-based production company, who is suing her over an alleged failure to pay for the purchase of films amounting to RM2 million.
According to Rina's lawyer Irwan Mubarak, there is a plan to reach a settlement with the plaintiff.
"(It will be an) out-of-court settlement, God willing," he said in a text message today.
Malaysiakini contacted Irwan for comments after English daily the Malay Mail reported that Rina was absent from the case proceedings earlier today, which was fixed for the judgment debtor summons at the Kuala Lumpur High Court.
According to the news report, court documents showed that the production company had filed a statement of claim against Rina on Nov 8, 2018 for US$553,795 (RM2.3 million), that was supposed to be fully paid by July 31, 2019.
"The claim was for several films, comedy shows and documentaries within the comedy genre to three companies of which Rina was the director," the Malay Mail said.
Asked on Rina's absence, her counsel said that there were two reasons the minister could not appear in court today.
He said that Rina had to attend to an obligation as a minister, and also rush to the funeral of her bodyguard who had just died. - Mkini
