Selangor water problems - Otai Reformis suggests salary cut

Malaysiakini

Lembaga Urus Air Selangor (Luas) could use its power to close down factories located along rivers to ensure that there would be no more oil spills which lead to a water supply disruption, says Otai Reformis 1998.
Their statement followed water disruption involving seven regions in the Klang Valley since yesterday due to the raw water pollution at Sungai Selangor.
The Selayang Municipal Council today had slapped a temporary cease operation notice against a factory in Rawang which is believed to have caused the pollution which affected the water supply.
It said a preliminary probe, joined by Luas, showed that the factory failed to store oil waste according to regulations.
"Oil spills incidents involving factories located near the river are nothing new.
"We have frequently heard of the problem and we questioned Luas which should have monitored the water supply in Selangor.
"If the state government could clear squatters in Sungai Buloh and Subang to make way to expand the river, I don't see why Luas cannot use its power to chase away factories along the river," said Otai Reformis secretary Abdul Razak Ismail (above).
Razak also suggested for salaries of certain individuals to be deducted by RM10 every time there was a water disruption in the future as "a fine" for their failure to solve the water problem.
He said these individuals include Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari, environmental exco Hee Loy Sian, Luas director Hashim Osman and Air Selangor CEO Suhaimi Kamaralzaman.
Meanwhile, Amirudin today tweeted that the related agency has deployed 78 tankers, 22 jumbo tankers and 54 static tankers to areas affected by the water disruption.
He also said that 18 local service centres were opened and 23,000 five-litre water bottles would be distributed to those affected.
In the effort to solve the problem, he said the related agency was in the midst of carrying out "flushing" and "dilution" work to eliminate the pollution. - Mkini
