The Shah Alam High Court today dismissed a legal challenge against the remand of four brothers over their alleged involvement in the pollution of Sungai Gong.
Judge Ab Karim Ab Rahman made the ruling during open-court proceedings this afternoon.
Yesterday, it was reported that the remand against the four brothers was extended by another five days.
The brothers, aged between 50 and 60, were initially remanded for six days from Monday by the Selayang Magistrate's Court.
During proceedings before the High Court today, Ab Karim ruled that the remand period is reasonable when taking into account the public interest in the matter, among others.
“For me, the period of time issued (by the magistrate for the remand) is reasonable. I do not think the period of time should be reduced.
“The magistrate’s reasoning in both cases (initial remand and extension of the remand) are proper.
“I will not disturb the decision of the magistrate,” Ab Karim said when dismissing the legal challenge by the four brothers.
The High Court judge’s ruling this afternoon also applies to a similar remand legal challenge by four workers of the depot linked to the brothers.
The depot was alleged to be involved in the pollution incident that led to the recent water disruption in the Klang Valley.
Lawyer Abdul Rashid Ismail appeared for the four brothers while counsel M Reza Hassan appeared for the four depot workers.
On Sept 3, it was reported that pollution at Sungai Selangor has caused an unscheduled disruption for the water supply to 1,292 areas in Kuala Lumpur, Petaling, Klang, Shah Alam, Kuala Selangor, Hulu Selangor, Gombak and Kuala Langat.
On Sept 9, Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Air Selangor) announced that the unscheduled water supply disruption in seven regions in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur as a result of the forced closure of the Sungai Selangor Phase 1, 2, 3 and Rantau Panjang Water Treatment Plants due to pollution at the raw water source since last Sept 3 has been fully restored. - Mkini
