Shafie asks how a 'fractured' opposition can implement its manifesto

Malaysiakini

SABAH POLLS | Warisan president Shafie Apdal has questioned whether a "fractured" opposition pact in Sabah can go on to implement its manifesto for the state polls.
The manifesto is slated to be unveiled by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin this afternoon.
"One can imagine that they can spell out (the manifesto), but they are not on the united front.
"It can look good but the implementation is (more) important. You can spell out how good the manifesto can be, but whether they are tenable or achievable, that's another matter," Shafie told the media on the sidelines of Malaysia Day celebration in Kota Kinabalu this morning.
The caretaker chief minister was responding to the manifesto by Perikatan Nasional and BN, called "Aku Janji" (Pledge), which among others, would allow greater autonomy for the local ruling parties to decide on development project while the fund would be channelled by the federal government.
On Sept 12, Muhyiddin announced that the opposition in Sabah, mainly PN, BN and Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS), would be rebranded as Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS).
The viability of the GRS coalition is now in question after PBS decided not to attend the unveiling of the manifesto.
According to a notice sent out to the media, the prime minister would only launch the manifesto by PN and BN.
PBS had unveiled its own manifesto, which called for the formulation of anti-hopping law and Sabah identity cards to curb illegal immigrants issues.
On top of that, BN and PN were seen to have differences in deciding the chief ministerial candidate.
Shafie said his party had earlier unveiled its vision and mission, which is the continuity of its election manifesto in 2018 general election.
He also said Warisan and its allies were firm in highlighting what the locals require and need.
Meanwhile, Shafie also turned down an invite from Bersatu supreme council member Azmin Ali to debate with Bersatu's prospective chief minister candidate Hajiji Mohd Noor.
"Well, they can have the debate, but I want to see the voters of Sabah.
"Don't waste time, he can waste his time. He (Hajiji) was a member of Pakatan Harapan, but he jumped over, he is a frog," he said.
When asked about Bersih which made a similar call for all the prospective chief ministers to debate, Shafie said he needs to stay focus on winning the state polls.
"Well, anytime. But what is important is I am very focused on winning the election... I have to reach out to as many voters as possible in Sabah," he added.
The Sabah polls will take place on Sept 26. - Mkini
