Selangor speaker reprimands BN, PAS reps for breaching dress code

Selangor speaker Ng Suee Lim reprimanded five opposition members for not adhering to the dress code after they wore baju Melayu to the state assembly sitting.

Berita Harian reported that Ng (above) had advised the assemblypersons and explained that they must wear a lounge suit during the sitting, while national attire is allowed on Fridays.

The five assemblypersons were Mohd Shamsudin Lias (Sungai Burong), Zakaria Hanafi (Semenyih), Mohd Imran Tamrin (Sungai Panjang), Rizam Ismail (Sungai Air Tawar), and Ahmad Yunus Hairi (Sijangkang).

"This morning, in this honourable assembly hall, I see assemblypersons breaching the rule. I give leeway on Friday where assemblypersons can wear national attire.

"I reiterated a similar matter to the Templer assemblyperson (Pakatan Harapan) prior to this.

"Today I only have advice. Tomorrow please follow the rule so the people can see us as leaders with discipline," Ng said.

Free Malaysia Today reported that Shamsudin protested and questioned Ng about the existence of any rule concerning the dress code.

"I think we are obeying the rules. Also, the public would be happy if we wore the baju Melayu," he said.

Ng responded by saying that he was empowered to make a ruling on the dress code based on Standing Order 87(7) and did not wish to prolong the issue.

The speaker said that he wanted to see those assemblypersons wearing lounge suits tomorrow. - Mkini
