Bersatu has unanimously approved a proposal to set up a new wing for its non-bumiputera associate members.
The party, at its third annual general assembly yesterday, greenlit an amendment to the party constitution for the creation of the wing.
The constitution amendment committee presented the proposal on the constitution amendment, its party secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin said in a statement today.
"The amendment to the constitution is expected to strengthen the organisational structure at all levels as well as grassroots.
"It also proves the party's openness and inclusivity in regard to membership or party policy," he said.
The proposal came after Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin said that the party would create a new wing for associate members so the latter can hold leadership positions and contribute ideas.
In August, former PKR lawmaker Edmund Santhara Kumar Ramanaidu became the first non-bumiputera MP to join Bersatu.
Meanwhile, Hamzah said 502 delegates from all levels had joined yesterday's meeting.
He revealed that Bersatu membership had soared to 508,725 as compared to 222,980 members last year. - Mkini
