Prime Minister Muhiyuddin Yassin was spot on when he stated that he would "return the mandate to the people and let them choose the government they want".
There is no democracy at work if a government is not elected by the people. Unfortunately, as the prime minister himself knows too well, the very government he now heads was not a government that the people chose.
Perikatan Nasional (PN) was never mandated by the people.
Hence when the PM now states the right thing, that the people have the mandate to choose their government, he has literally deemed his position as an undemocratic and untenable occupation.
It is unfortunate that he did not have the foresight and wisdom then, in February 2020, when he joined a group to oust a mandated government and instead take power.
What a price we Malaysians are paying all in the name of power grabs. A price that is proving to be too costly in the Covid-19 pandemic environment.
It was no fault of the citizens. Politicians have to take the blame for the mess we are in today, including Muhyiddin himself.
Hopefully, the PM's recognition of a working, functioning democracy will become a reality when he calls for a general election soon. - Mkini
