 | Human Resources Minister M Saravanan has been told to undergo quarantine after his aide who attended the National Security Council meeting with him on Jan 13 later tested positive for Covid-19.

For the most part, the meeting was held virtually but Saravanan participated in the meeting from his ministry with his aides present.

This was revealed in a letter dated Jan 16 to Saravanan informing him that he had been identified as a close contact of his political secretary who had contracted the coronavirus.

"Please be informed that your political secretary has been confirmed positive for Covid-19 on Jan 16. As such, contact tracing has identified you as a close contact because you were involved in an NSC special meeting on Jan 13, which was also attended by the patient.

"You are asked to immediately self-quarantine effective Jan 16 until 22 to break the transmission of Covid-19," read the letter from the management services division of the Human Resources Ministry, which was sighted by Malaysiakini today.

A Human Resources Ministry spokesperson clarified that Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, who chaired the meeting, was not exposed as they were not at the same venue.

The NSC special meeting is held every day and it is usually chaired Muhyiddin and attended by Defence Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, Health Minister Dr Adham Baba, Education Minister Mohd Radzi Md Jidin, Works Minister Fadillah Yusof, Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, Inspector-General of Police Abdul Hamid Bador and the Armed Forces chief Affendi Buang, among others.

The meeting is held to discuss the Covid-19 situation in the country as well as policies related to it.

Last week, several ministers had also announced they had been infected with Covid-19, such as Home Minister Hamzah Zainudin, Economic Affairs Minister Mustapa Mohamed, and Women, Family, and Community Development Minister Rina Harun.

Other politicians who tested positive for Covid-19 recently include Gua Musang MP Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah, PAS vice-president Idris Ahmad and Deputy Communications and Multimedia Minister Zahidi Zainul Abidin. - Mkini
