PETALING JAYA: The Bentong prison and staff quarters will be under an enhanced movement control order (EMCO) from tomorrow until Feb 8.

In a statement today, senior minister for security Ismail Sabri Yaakob said that 615 Covid-19 cases had been detected in the area, involving 574 inmates, 34 prison staff and five of their family members.

Ismail said the health ministry had also observed an increase in cases among inmates and the EMCO in the area would allow them to conduct targeted screening and contact tracing.

Meanwhile, Ismail said 550 people were arrested by the police yesterday over movement control order-related offences.

He said 499 of them were fined, 42 were remanded while nine were granted bail.

Most of the offences were for failing to wear face masks (130).

Among the other offences were failing to provide materials for contact tracing or registration (112), participating in activities which made physical distancing difficult (68), and travelling across states or districts without permission (54).

Meanwhile, a total of 2,569 compliance task force teams were deployed to conduct checks on 29,344 supermarkets, restaurants, hawker stalls, factories, banks, government offices, as well as land, water and air transport terminals.

The authorities also detained 54 undocumented migrants as part of the ongoing Op Benteng campaign.

They also confiscated five vehicles and two boats. - FMT
