Extra lessons in basic skills for Standard One pupils

Standard One pupils will get additional lessons on reading, writing and arithmetic.

PETALING JAYA: The education ministry has prepared a transition programme for children entering Standard One this year, as they may have not acquired basic skills in reading, writing and arithmetic because kindergartens were closed in 2020.

Education director-general Habibah Abdul Rahim said teachers will conduct a 43-day instructional programme for the children.

“The ministry really hopes that teachers will carry out this transition programme in the best way possible in facing this situation,” she said.

For home-based learning for students who were not sitting for major exams, which started last Jan 20, Habibah said this was to be done via three methods. These are:

  • online teaching and learning for students with devices and internet connection,
  • offline for students with devices but no internet connection using teaching modules prepared by teachers and textbooks, and
  • off-site teaching and learning at community centres or temporary displacement centres for disasters or diseases.

She said face-to-face physical teaching and learning is only allowed for those sitting for public examinations and equivalent international exams. These include Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM), Sijil Vokasional Malaysia (SVM), Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia (SKM), Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM), Sijil Tinggi Agama Malaysia (STAM) and Diploma Vokasional Malaysia (DVM).

Home-based learning methods were announced by senior minister of education Radzi Jidin in April last year when a national lockdown under the movement control order was in place. - FMT
