PETALING JAYA: Singapore has commenced work on its station for the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link, which is expected to be operational by the end of 2026.

CNA reported that the RTS Link Woodlands North station will be built underground with a link to the Customs, immigration and quarantine building.

The Woodlands North station will be connected to Bukit Chagar station in Johor through a 25m long elevated track above the Straits of Johor.

Singapore’s Transport Minister Ong Ye Kung expressed confidence that the project would be completed on schedule, adding that the link will provide economic and social benefits to the country.

“With a capacity of up to 10,000 commuters per hour per direction, the RTS Link can potentially shift thousands of motorcycles and cars off the causeway, while providing a faster and more comfortable commute,” he said at the station’s groundbreaking ceremony today.

Works for the RTS Link began last year after being officially launched on Nov 22, although it was originally slated to be completed by 2024.

It was suspended several times after Pakatan Harapan formed the government in 2018 but officially resumed in July last year.

Developed by Malaysia Rapid Transit System Sdn Bhd, a subsidiary of MRT Corp, the 4km light rail link will be able to serve up to 10,000 commuters per hour during peak periods. - FMT
