KUALA LUMPUR: Authorities seized over RM482,000 worth of frozen mutton at the North Butterworth Terminal Container (NBCT) in Penang yesterday.
The mutton, weighing 22 tonnes and valued at RM482,527.32, was seized by the Penang's Malaysian Department of Quarantine and Inspection Services (Maqis) at the port about 11am.
According to sources, the consignment was imported from New Zealand by a Selangor based company.
The mutton was imported with uncertified halal logo on the packaging and also without labeling inside the box as per required.
Authorities classified these offences under Section 15(1) and 15(2) of the Maqis Act 2011 for import and export conditions.
"It is not yet known if the mutton was sourced from certified abattoirs recognised by the Islamic Development Department (Jakim)," the source said on Wednesday.
When contacted, Maqis Penang director Zarina Ramli confirmed the seizure of the mutton consignment.
"We also lodged a police report earlier today," she said. - NST
