KOTA BARU: Kelantan has been placed on high alert for more severe floods after two major rivers breached their danger levels this evening.

The two rivers are Sungai Kelantan and its stretches along the Sultan's Pier in Kota Baru, Machang, Kusial Tanah Merah, Kuala Krai and Gua Musang, as well as Sungai Golok in Rantau Panjang.

It is understood that heavy flow of water from the state's interior have since flown downstream into the two rivers.

The state Welfare Department, in its website, also noted that three other rivers in the state are now at 'warning' level.

The department said that as of 6.30pm today, 5,402 flood victims from 1,448 families are seeking shelter in 72 relief centres in five districts, namely Pasir Mas, Tanah Merah, Kuala Krai, Gua Musang and Jeli.

Kuala Krai currently has the highest number victims at 2,669, followed by Pasir Mas (1,139) and Jeli (624).

The floods in Kelantan has also claimed two lives - both teenagers.

The first death involved a 19-year-old boy in Rantau Panjang, who was electrocuted to death last night. He is believed to have attempted to reach a nearby flood relief centre with a friend when he was electrocuted around 8pm.

The second fatality involved a 20-year-old who drowned after falling from his boat while ferrying evacuees at Kampung Manjor in Kuala Krai last night. - NST
