PAS to meet on Saturday to discuss possible Umno-Bersatu breakup

PAS will hold its central committee meeting on Saturday, at which it will discuss the forthcoming Umno general assembly motion for the party to sever its ties with Bersatu.

PAS treasurer Iskandar Abd Samad (above) said this when asked to comment on the position taken by the Umno supreme council last night.

“No comment. This Saturday, the PAS central leadership will hold a meeting and issue a statement after that,” he said when contacted.

The Umno supreme council meeting chaired by party president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi yesterday decided to bring a motion regarding the party’s strained relations with Bersatu to the Umno general assembly, which will convene on Jan 31.

The motion calls on the party sever its ties with Bersatu when the 15th general election comes around, and to lobby for the election to be held by April, depending on the Covid-19 situation in the country.

It also calls on the party to strengthen its relations with PAS.

Umno information chief Shahril Hamdan said the supreme council arrived at the decision after considering motions tabled by 189 out of the party’s 191 divisions.

Earlier, it was reported that 189 Umno divisions had decided to reject further cooperation with Bersatu in their respective divisional meetings.

However, former BN secretary-general Annuar Musa claimed only 99 divisions had rejected cooperation with the Umno splinter party.

Meanwhile, PAS Youth deputy chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari said he would leave it to PAS’ top leadership to decide on the party’s stance on the matter.

“It’s hard (to comment), but it depends on the party leadership. I can’t comment,” the Pasir Mas MP told Malaysiakini.

Previously, PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said PAS was taking a ‘wait and see’ approach to the dispute between its two allies.

This is because a final decision by Umno has yet to be made and this would only come about at the Umno general assembly.

“Since the motion would be debated at the Umno general assembly, PAS will wait and see how far this motion would be accepted or rejected by the delegates,” Tuan Ibrahim told Malaysiakini.

He declined to dwell further on the party’s deliberations on the issue. - Mkini
