Paw-sitively safe: 40 cats among flood victims evacuated to relief centre

The love and concern she has for her 40 cats from being swept away by the flood compelled their owner to evacuate all of them to the relief centre at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Kuala Krai in Kelantan today.

Nohidayah Kamaruddin, 31, said all her beloved cats were evacuated with the assistance of the Kuala Krai Fire and Rescue Department personnel who carried the cats for 500 metres from her house through the waist-level water.

"My house is located near the river and as soon as the floodwaters rose sharply and flowed into the house, I contacted the firefighters to help evacuate these cats.

"Previously, I only had five cats but since the number has more than tripled, I want them to be safe by placing them at the relief centre," she said when met while evacuating the cats from her house in Kampung Kenor.

She also brought along six cages, food and litter sand for the cats’ comfort even at the relief centre.

The sixth child of nine siblings said, all the cats under her care were rescued stray cats which used to be sickly and needing treatment and proper care.

"The 2014 Bah Kuning (yellow flood) gave me the opportunity to find many stray cats which were hungry and in pain that eventually compelled me to take them home for treatment.

"This has driven me to continue saving stray and sickly cats which I find endearing," she said.

Kuala Krai Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) chief, assistant fire superintendent Muhammad Rizwan Ar-Rafee Parsimin said 11 personnel braved the floodwaters to save the cats.

He said his department always received distress calls from flood-affected residents not only involving human lives but also pets’.
