Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman has urged the Education Ministry to be proactive in preventing a possible "SPM cluster" after 18 students returning to their school hostels for the new semester in Sabah tested positive for Covid-19.
"Will Education Minister Mohd Radzi Jidin still ignore the risk of an 'SPM Cluster' by going ahead with plans to reopen schools for examination candidates beginning tomorrow?
"The Education Ministry should prevent the incident from happening and the case of students in Sabah should be taken as a signal for the minister," Syed Saddiq said.
The Muda founder also criticised the lack of policy coordination between the federal and Sabah state governments on how to manage the spread of Covid-19 among exam year students who are resuming face-to-face classes tomorrow.
"How can there be a non-uniform Covid-19 standard operating procedure between the Sabah state government and instructions from Senior Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob?
"Last week, the minister said university students and students in hostels are not required to be screened for Covid-19. This is not efficient enforcement," the former youth and sports minister said.
He added that Ismail's instruction contradicted the Sabah State Health Department's call for all students to be screened, which led to the discovery of the positive cases.
The Education Ministry announced yesterday that the SPM trial examinations have been cancelled, after initially postponing them after the second movement control order was declared.
Earlier today, English-daily New Straits Times reported that 18 students returning to school hostels in the past two days tested positive for Covid-19.
The Sabah state government's Covid-19 spokesperson, Masidi Manjun, was quoted as saying that district health offices in the state have been helping screen students returning to school hostels for Covid-19. - Mkini
