DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang is throwing his support behind calls for a special Parliament sitting on the Covid-19 pandemic.
This as Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan also attempts to rally the party's MPs to support a special sitting during the state of emergency.
Even though Parliament is suspended during the emergency, Lim pointed out that the Emergency (Essential Powers) Ordinance 2021 allows the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to summon a Parliament sitting if he deems it appropriate.
Lim said the Covid-19 situation in the country was deteriorating at a worse pace than the global rate.
He said between Dec 1 last year and today, the number of global Covid-19 cases had increased by 1.48 times but in Malaysia, the increase was 2.46 times during the same period.
"For this reason, I support the call for a special Parliament sitting on the Covid-19 pandemic.
"Let Parliament set an example for all Malaysians, regardless of race, religion, politics or region to unite for the national cause to save Malaysia from the pandemic," he added.
Earlier today, it was revealed that Umno had sent letters to all of its MPs asking that they support a special Parliament sitting.
However, Umno's Ketereh MP Annuar Musa, who has drifted away from the party's leadership and is more supportive of Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, criticised the move.
He said Ahmad, who replaced him as the Umno secretary-general, should have consulted legal experts first.
In justifying the state of emergency, Muhyiddin previously said it was necessary to curb the spread of Covid-19 but critics have accused him of using the proclamation to cling on to power after losing his majority in the Dewan Rakyat.
The emergency took effect on Jan 11 and will last until Aug 1. During this time, Muhyiddin's government can govern by decree. - Mkini
