Paloh rep wonders whom did Hamzah mean by 'us'?

Home Minister Hamzah Zainudin's admission that he was the person in an audio clip where participants discussed the restructuring of police top brass has opened a can of worms, said Paloh assemblyperson Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali.

Specifically, Sheikh Umar (above) pointed to Hamzah's description in the audio clip that the new inspector-general of police (IGP) was appointed "because dia budak kita, budak Perak, family semua kat sana (he is our boy, a Perak boy, his family is there) and it will be very good for us".

The DAP lawmaker said Hamzah needs to explain what he meant when he said "our boy".

"Apart from that, what did Hamzah mean when he said 'it will be very good for us'? Who does he mean by 'us' in the context of that conversation?" Sheikh Umar asked in a statement today.

Now that the minister had confessed, Sheikh Umar said the public has a right to seek further clarification.

He added that Hamzah had nothing to be proud of by making the confession because he had, allegedly, brought police to disrepute.

"He is like politicians with no integrity trying to organise the police, in a scene that is often depicted in Tamil films," the Johor assemblyperson said.

Yesterday, Hamzah admitted to being the person in the widely circulated audio clip and insisted he did nothing wrong.

Home Minister Hamzah Zainudin

"I believe that was really my voice. And I have done nothing wrong. What is the offence here?" he said after handing an appointment letter to incoming IGP Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani.

"The only offence (with the audio clip) was the person who taped my conversation with someone. That is wrong. What I did was not wrong."

Outgoing IGP Abdul Hamid Bador, at a separate press conference yesterday, accused Hamzah of meddling with the appointment of senior police officers.

Hamzah chairs the police force commission. According to the Federal Constitution, the commission advises the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on the appointment of top police positions. - Mkini
